Current Affairs Competition Reflections

Winning the West District Champion and being one of the top 5 finalists on 23rd July 2011 had been a memorable moment for me, as well as my team. Our efforts had finally paid off. We had to stay back after school almost every day to prepare for the competition – printing of the notebook, designing of the pages, sorting out the contents, designing the booth and practicing of our lines. Throughout the whole process, I had learnt a lot of new things such as what IFRC had done in the past 2 years and how Singaporeans can help. Not only these things, I had also learn how to use Photoshop more in depth.

During the preparation time for this competition, I have to stay up late to complete our tasks given to us. Sometimes, I will not have enough time to sleep and hence not concentrating on lessons. This is due to improper planning of time. Because of this, I had learnt how to cope my time well and schedule my time well as we have to study, attend school, attend tuition while preparing for the competition at the same time.

I felt a sense of satisfaction as well as relief when we were announced as the West District Champion. But, when they announced that our team was one of the top 5 finalists, I feel stressed and I asked myself ‘Can I really do this? We had never entered into the finals before… and the competing schools are so strong.’ But Ms. Tracy told us that no matter how strong our rivals are, have faith and confidence in ourselves. We just have to try our best. During our preparation time, I can see that every of my team members were trying their best and this even make me more determined to work harder and win for the finals. We did our best for the finals. I did not mind if we didn’t win for the finals, as I felt that at least we won the West District Champion and got into the finals.

After winning the Current Affairs Competition, we have the National Footdrill Competition coming up next. This time round, I have more determination and fighting spirit to win this competition too as this is a prestigious competition. I had really want to enter into this competition ever since I saw my seniors training so hard just for this competition last year. This time round, most of us are also doing something that is new to us – Fancy drills. For this competition, I have more determination and I believe that we can win for this competition too.

In conclusion, I had really learnt a lot while preparing for this competition and I believe that our unit could also win for the upcoming National Footdrill Competition if we have the team spirit and the determination.
