Coastal Cleanup 2010 Write-Up

I had fun taking part in the coastal cleanup activity at Pulau Ubin on Saturday. At first, we had an almost 1 hour bus trip from Jurong to Changi. We alight outside the Changi Ferry Terminal and take a boat to pulau ubin. Once we reached Pulau Ubin, Commonwealth Red Cross unit had already started to pick up the litter. We were told to pick up the litter along the coastline of the island with commonwealth secondary school. We had to pick up litter, organize them in groups (etc., plastic, glass) and record what we collected. Later, we were spilt into groups within our own unit first, and we are spilt into groups again, but with the Commonwealth Red Cross cadets. I was quite surprised as I saw 4 of my primary school mates, among the commonwealth Red Cross unit. But, while we were picking up litter, yiyu was feeling unwell and had to stop and rest. Later, we played bonding games. There were 2 groups-Alpha and Bravo and I was in Bravo. I managed to remember all the names that were in my group. We had to create a cheer too. Coincidentally, both groups were using the same cheer, but Alpha won. After the bonding games, we went to take a group picture and ended this activity. We had a lot of fun but we also felt very tired at the end of the day. I learnt that the main objective for this activity is to clear the litter along the coastline, to prevent animals that are living nearby being killed by plastic bottles, etc. Many Innocent animals had been killed by the litter that we throw into the sea. To prevent this from happening often, we were told to clear the litter and I’m glad that I could help. As the data that we recorded, will be analyzed. But, it may have a huge impact to the environment after what we had done. I felt that this activity is very meaningful and we had at least contributed something. This is the first time that I had experienced these things and I would like to participate more of these activities in the future.

First Aid Competition 2010 Write-Up

FAC is the second competition that I had participated for this year. Because of 15 minutes for the competition, we had to go for extra intensive training. In my opinion, the Evacuation team was really tough. They had to evacuate 3 casualties at one go and they had to repeat again and again when they had mistakes. Before the competition, we had one last time of practice and I was confident of winning the West District Champion as we had the intensive training conducted by Alvin sir and Ms Lee. During those training, we had to repeat, tying the ring pad, treatment for the casualties over and over. We had to be fast and accurate so as to ensure the casualties’ lives are safe. During weekends, we had to read through the syllabus file to be more precise for the treatment. We had to take some bandages home to practice the different types of bandages. At first, my sister was impressed of the bandages that I had learnt. But after a few days, she got irritated and annoyed as I am always trying out the bandages on her. I had no choice but to try bandage my ankle or hand. After each training, the confidence inside me had increased, until the actual day. We went for the last practice and we set off to St Margaret Secondary School. We went to the holding room and waited for our turn to compete. We had to wait for a long time and I actually fall a sleep in the holding room. Soon, we had to change the holding room as they are using for another purposes. I was surprised when JinLi told me that the formation was totally different from how we practiced. My confidence had decreased rapidly. The plan was actually changed. The treatment team members had to evacuate 2 of the casualties. I was given a scenario and I had to evacuate Casualty 1 who was Fatin. She had injuries of sprained left ankle and dislocation of right shoulder. JinLi suggested me to use Human crutch to evacuate her to the base. I agreed and read the instructions for Human Crutch. When the whole team was arrived at the scene, other group had already started after the whistle being blown while we listen for the instructions being made by JinLi. Some of the judges were surprised by our actions. As, other group had already started but we were still listening to the instructions being made by JinLi. We immediately execute our plan. The treatment team, excluding Ms Lee ran to the casualties side and evacuate them. Fitri and Syairah used Mini Skirt to evacuate Huda. When I intend to use Human Crutch to evacuate Fatin, I then realized that I had no idea to evacuate her. Because, her right shoulder was dislocated. My mind went blank and I was lost. Luckily, after Fitri and Syairah had evacuated Huda, Fitri ran back to help me. Fitri immediately instructed Fatin what to do. Fitri told Fatin to use her uninjured leg to use force to stand while I hold Fatin on her uninjured shoulder to support her. This method actually works and I used Human Crutch to evacuate Fatin back to the base for treatment. Fatin was then rescued. Ms Lee and Syairah attended to Fatin while I comforted Huda. I helped Huda to fan her leg as she was suffering from second degree burnt on her leg. After the competition ends, we went back to the holding room to get our bags and went for lunch. After lunch, Kwan Wai and I went to the parade square to join Ms Lee and the others to watch the other schools. Soon, Hannah and Yiyu joined us. Coco and I accompanied Hannah to have her lunch and went back for the results. We than received certificates of participation and waited for the results. After we know that we won the West District Champion, the whole team screamed and clap, including the Sec 4s. We waited for the announcement of teams who were in the Finals. I least expected that our school had got into the finals. Although we did not win the Finals, I had gain experiences from this competitions.
