First Aid Competition
Writeup By: CPL Foo Chek Jun

First Aid Competition ( FAC) 2008 was an ingenious success and an accrued accomplishment to be reckoned with. This year was evidently witnessed as an assertively competitive one with rife participation from various schools, comprising of links and cadets alike. Battling it out with wits on first aid in the theory segment and remonstrating our aptitudes and repose composures under the different scenarios to handle the 'casualties' in the practical segment, it would definitely be the glowing eminence bestowed on the emerging winners, either in district levels or in other aspects.

It was a comprehensible honour for Huayi Red Cross as yet again, we were gratified to clinch the opportunity as a participant in the tantalizing competition. Having braced ourselves beforehand with mock scenarios and drilled implementations of designated timeframes, we were frazzled but not intimidated. It was a quivering desire to put out skills down to vagary and wield.

Representing our unit, Corporal. Guo Yu Jun, Corporal. Tan Si Ying, Corporal. Tan Jia Min and last but not least Corporal. Chua Yee San were imposed with this hefty responsibility to which they were acclined to with esteem and renunciations of kudos. Huayi Red Cross's entire unit were enshroulded with the sense of unity and warmth and came to support our four musketeers.

Finally, the day of recognition had dawned on us. Arrant spasms of anxiety collated were inadequate to overwhelm a pliably resolute and affirmative spirit to gain the last honours for the unit. The competition adhered without tumult. Our four representatives though mounted with apprehensibly gruelling questions, got to grips with them tactfully. As the theory segment advanced, it was proclivity as they grasped a more profound knowledge of first aid and to proffer remarkable answers, all made possible with a determined quintessence.

Next up, the practical segment. Huayi's cadets had to handle a semi-conscious 'casualty' with injuries consisting of a foreign object in one hand and another compounded with burns and blisters. They too were moollified when nerve-wracking queries hurled by the judges surfaced. Propped with sustainable first aid skills and marvellous reassuredness, out cadets overcame the precipitated scenario with sanctimonious.

As every single individual sat rhetorically in the hall for the befalling results, breaths were held as one. Sagacious ones were poised, the others engaged in discussions. Hail and behold, it was time to announce! When the emcee spouted on west district, the steadfast atmoshphere hung in mid-air. Huayi Red Cross emerged as the second runner-up! It was a moment of gratitude and relief. The arduous trainings had paid off!
Hereby, congratulations to the FAC team for coming in second runner-up! All well had ended well. Our four representatives had laudatorily done the unit proud. With felicitations and well-reserved applauses, we can certainly be awaiting more good news along our paths! Huayi Red Cross all the way! (:

Visit to Tortoise Musuem and Ren Ci Lodge
Writeup By: CPL Foo Chek Jun

On the fourth of November, an otherwise bleary morning was further invigorated when Hua Yi Secondary School's cadets treaded onto the awe-inspiring path of ' The Live Turtle and Tortoise Museum' located in the prestigiously revered Chinese Garden. Upon admission, we were gripped with shock to come upon the knowledge that the museum has attained the 'Guinness World Records' for withholding the largest collection of 3,456 tortoises and turtles in the world, comprising of 1,000 live specimens and innumerable ornaments, tablewares, furnitures and even the presence of toys in the aura of these shelled creatures. What a whooping figure!

Affable and friendly, Mr. Danny Tan, one of the collectors, was all ready to conduct a guided tour upon witnessing the bewitchment found on our astonished faces. We were exposed to the mystic jungle river, the harnessing charm and majestic beauty of the 'Radiated turtle' to begin with! The tanks were overwhelmed with turtles and tortoise you will dread missing! Now, i will have the shattering honour to introduce the sedative little ones!

The ultimate rarity: the 'Golden Temple turtle' , 'Golden Terrapin turtle' and the 'Golden soft-shell turtle'! For the flattest tortoise in history, the well-acclaimed 'Pancake tortoise' is renowned! The acritical 6-legged tortoise is none other than the 'Asian Brown tortoise', not to forget the 'Sulcata' ; world's third largest tortoise! Definitely spellbounded, the most dangerous turtle is the 'Alligator Snapping turtle'. Mr. Danny Tan elaborated on its menace, this very turtle can bite off your entire hand if you ever enter its mirthless jaw! Talk about a shielding facade of an enemy! Last but not least, the 'Snake necked turtle' is also our inhibited longest neck turtle!

Our cadets really had an unforgettable experience befriending the tortoises by feeding them cucumbers. Witnessing the bliss that was evidently seen, it was nonetheless a memorable trip. However, all things had to come to a conclusion. After taking pictures with the widely-acclaimed owner, we purchased souvenirs (yes, tortoises and turtles' ornaments of course!) and baded goodbye.

Our next destination is the 'Ren Ci Wan Qing Lodge' , a centre for the old folks to segregate and rehabilitate. Mounted with the recyclable materials like tissue boxes, toilet rolls and cardboards; for instance that we had readied ourselves with, all decorated and conscientiously designed. We were all prepared to set off. At the centre, we immediately got down to work without a hinge of time wasted on dilly-dallying. We were not oblivious of the fact that Christmas is dawning and it was very crucial to provide the old folks with a cheery atmosphere for happiness to sink in. Allocating and delegating the various tasks, the centre was soonafter transformed into a gleeful haven. Through implementation of arduous long hours and hard work, the sweat that lingered ensured our determination to succeed and to accomplish our 'mission'. The christmas tree created out of cotton balls, the glittery 'merry christmas' evolved, the star-shaped cards filled with our heartwarming greetings and the warm ambience we morphed were our dedications.

Glancing at the old folks' pleasurable looks, we were really delighted. After taking a group photo, we left with a lifting spirit. Fourth of November had knitted into joy and enrichment. Not only had we boosted our intrapersonal skills but also touched on the mundane lives of others! We will definitely be indulged in the self-awareness of aiding others in need and look forward to another fun-filled momentum! (:

Hua Yi Red Cross Youth Project IBS '08 was prominently an ascertained revelation that our unit's Red Cross cadets are forever striving for excellence, topped with sheer determination, resillience and a positive inclination towards anything possible. The 3days 2 nights camp was headstart with the readiness of an ensuing perseverance to acquire proficient knowledge on these three fields, namely 'Outdoor Activities', 'Evacuation' and 'Footdrill'. With the camp rules and expectations highlighted, the cadets were fully geared up to initiate the camp. It was furthermore a stepping stone as fellow cadets led the lessons in place of sirs and ma'ams. This enhanced their leadership skills, presentation techniques and at the same time served as a recap for all.

During Outdoor Activities's lesson, cadets were inherently embroiled in trying their hands out on the numerous knots and lashings, not to forget applying knowledge on utilising a silva compass. Many faced difficulties as they were relatively new to this field. However, packed with throes of passion and resoluteness, they hung on and it was definitely a moment of crowning glory when they accomplished their tasks. During Evacuation lessons, cadets once again paid full attention while evacuation theory and practical were dutifully meted out. Therein, cadets paired up and ignited the stimulus. After each round of inspection, it was heartening that everybody displayed a sense of urgency and the spirit of sharing through guidance and aiding.

Though impeded with a time constraint, cadets were no let-down. Stretcher drills, cradle carry, 4-aider human stretcher...we tackled them with a firm belief that we could overcome these stumbling obstacles. Footdrill aslo withheld the dawning realisation that Huayi's cadets have irrevocably bonded as one, their drills uplifted and maintaining a unified 'bang' was also a vital need.

On the second day, our unit's cadets partook in an eventful heritage trail along with Assumption English School. We were divided into four groups, dictatedly 'Alpha' , 'Bravo' , 'Charlie' and 'Delta'. With a commergence of both units' cadets, we arrived at our destination. Guided by various clues, cadets immediately spun into action. At each designated station, we engaged in games to derive the next clue for another station. The linking game too saw the cadets through another round of union, bondings and bountless aptitudes and competence. It was really a memorable day enshroulded with glee. Finally, it was the last day of camp. Huayi's very own chairperson, Corporal Guo Yu Jun gave a camp closing speech with acknowledgements of all cadets. Anticipatedly, Lance Corporal Cheow Kwan Wai was conferred the 'Best Camper' award. As the camp officially concluded, cadets left with brilliant smiles and pragmatic revere. All of us had achieved our goals one way or another and are certainly looking forward to another bout of bonsings. Huayi Red Cross all the way! :)
