Red Cross Cadet Link Activity

The cadet link activity consists of three schools, Fuhua Primary School, Hua Yi Secondary School and the Assumption English School. We were very excited while making our trip to Fuhua Primary school. During the bus journey, we could make new friends and interact with each other. We played some games with our fellow Red Cross members which promote teamwork that is essential to a uniformed group. For example, team - spirit. Although there were some casualties during the games, however, it is not very serious. This activities allow us to learn how to work better with my teammates and to listen to their advice. Teamwork is very important when we are working with others. Despite it being just a single game of captain’s ball, a lot of teamwork is required to pass the ball to the correct person and how you pass it will determine if your team will win. Even if you are working with strangers and not your friends, they are your teammates and so you must work together with them in order to accomplish the objective of why you are working together with them so teamwork is still very important no matter who you are working with or what the objective is.From this activity, I can see that teamwork between our fellow Red Cross members are getting better and that everybody enjoyed this activity very much. Although some of the teams lost, they still got some prizes as encouragement so as to make them work harder and let everyone enjoy themselves. I feel that this activity was very meaningful and it was not a wasted effort.

Visit to the Musuem of Shang Hai Toys on 18th Nov 2009

This trip to the Shanghai Toy Museum was something fresh and new since Hua Yi Red Cross Youth had not been to a museum trip as a unit together before. There were great varieties of toys on the 2nd level . We were guided by a professional tour guide and she provided us with interesting facts. There were actually meanings to every toy manufactured in the past, for example the toys in the past were made with celluloid which can be highly flammable! The appearance of the majority of the toys are not as colorful and attractive as the toys we have now in the market. Also, the way the toys function are totally different, most of them function using keys (where you turn the key in one direction and the toy will move by its own).

This additional spark of knowledge is just so interesting: Before our trip, we had always assumed that toys these days are naturally short-lived as such commonly battery-operated toys malfunction easily! However, it had never crossed our minds that ACTUALLY the toys of the past that have to be winded up before they entertain us with their gradual motions last for up to a hundred years! This is indeed fascinating to know.

Also, the character called “San Mao” that children of the 21st century get to view on television is basically a symbol of the hardship and difficult times people had to weather during war; and the Chinese' strong distaste towards Japan for stirring up the repulsive animosities between both countries.

All these new understandings allow me to reflect upon the issue of cherishing what we have right now instead of making groundless complaints all the time. Children in those days have waxed and winded toys while we have fanciful ones that tease and amuse us throughout the day. Toys are a crucial part and parcel of childhood! Instead of lamenting, we should really start preserving such beautiful memories and acknowledge the importance of what's present before they are all lost.

WEST DISTRICT CHAMP FOR NFAC'09

Throughout weeks of trainings for the preparation of the Red Cross National First Aid Competition 2009 held in Compassvale Secondary School on 7th November 2009, our Hua Yi NFAC team had been practicing very hard, hoping to clinch a West District Champion for the competition. This year’s National First Aid Competition was different from the previous years. This year, the competition was in the form of a telematch, which included 3 checkpoints, namely obstacle crossing (over obstacle in our evacuation gold syllabus) as well as bandaging skills and theory paper for the preliminary rounds, and 7 checkpoints for the final rounds, namely obstacle crossing (over and under obstacle), cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), bandaging, wheelchair drills, theory paper and improvised stretcher (in our evacuation syllabus).

During the long hours of trainings for the National First Aid Competition, everyone put in their best effort. Though knowing that the trainings were long and tedious, there were minimal complaints from the participants like why there were so many trainings and when they could rest. Lynn, Li Min, Kwan Wai and Jun Xiong were the first aiders assigned to the obstacle crossing in the competition itself. Even though some of the first aiders did not have much knowledge on the evacuation gold syllabus at first but as time went by and everyone learnt together, all of them had grasp hold of the knowledge and every single one of them was very clear of their roles after a few trainings. Although most of the times after practices of obstacle crossing, the team developed muscle aches and injuries such as bruises, the team still continued to endure and carried on.

Kah Nyin was the casualty throughout the trainings when the team practiced for the obstacle crossing and as they practiced, Kah Nyin had also help the team in many ways by reminding the team of what they had missed out and mistakes made. He had also been a great help to the first aiders during the training. As for the component on bandaging, Jia Min and our Youth Officer, Ms Lee, coordinated together well and practiced their bandaging skills with scenarios given by our very own secondary three cadets from our unit. Jia Min, being experienced in bandaging skills, assisted Ms Lee during the trainings while Ms Lee captured the knowledge very quickly. Those secondary three cadets not only helped out by coming up with scenarios for the first aiders in the component of bandaging but they also helped the team in the obstacle crossing— spot mistakes made as well as assist the team when there was a lack of manpower. Our reserve first aider, Chek Jun, had also trained very hard for the competition. Realizing that she could be of great help during the final rounds of the First Aid Competition, she read up her standard first aid syllabus, hoping that she could provide help during the final round.
Due to all these efforts that the NFAC team had put in as well as the help from our secondary three cadets, we grew in confidence as the competition drew near. During the competition, everyone recalled what they had always practiced and put into action. As we were competing against the other five schools, Ms Lee was the first to run back to the start point, also our end point, and our school had gotten hold of the 30 marks for the speed section, marking the fastest team in that round! Finally, as all the schools had finished competing and as the results for the competition had been calculated and collated by the judges, the final results was out. Then, the atmosphere was getting tense after the 2nd runner up and 1st runner up of the West District was being announced. “Hua Yi Secondary School Red Cross Youth has emerged as the West District Champion of the National First Aid Competition 2009!” the emcee announced.

We hereby congratulate the team for clinching West District Champion for the competition. You have done the unit proud. Let Hua Yi’s Red Cross unit continue to stand out throughout the years. We, can certainly do it!

Dear all,

Please be informed that there is a new section under the sidebar which is for your training attire. Please take note of all the comments and I would want to see it being complied on your full-uniform during the next training. The embedded music bar has been hosted by mixpod instead of imeem as most of you cannot hear the full version of all the songs. The sidebar is getting too crowded, therefore I have decided to remove all the members name to save space. I have the intention to remove the tagboard too, please give your inputs in the tagboard if you guys want to retain it or not by the end of this week or it will be removed permanently.

Thanks,
alvin.

Notifications Of Satisfying Unit's Achievements

Dear all,

pertained in lieu are nuggets of pleasurable news and appraisals with regard to the disclosed results for the 'Excellent Unit Award' (EUA) and 'Community Service Award' (CSA) in Hua Yi Red Cross. The happiness that is studiedly evident amidst the unit is augmentatively saluted when we are aware of the congenial outcomes. The unit has indeed crossed hurdles to achieve 'EUA Gold' and 'CSA Gold' simultaneously! The approving acknowledgement is certainly no mean feat as the unit had to sieve out arduous hours weekly for constant trainings as we are compelled to uphold and heighten our standard drills on a firmer viewpoint.

Also, the unit has been conscientiously participating in events organised by the Red Cross Head Quarters, and to date the toll's constituents are inclusive of namely, 'Arts Festival 08', 'National Foot Drill Competition 08' and 'Current Affairs Competition 08' for starters. The painstakingly meticulous and principled efforts put in were contentedly worth it when we clinched 'West District Champion' for 'Current Affairs Competition' and 'Second Runner-Up' for 'First Aid Competition'!

Not to be dismissed, cadets are also unhesitant in extending their warm arms of acceptation and predilection towards the less fortunate people in the community. 'Ren Ci Wan Qing Lodge' had been more than welcomed to be our host for a community service activity as we were cordially invited to spruce up the abode for the aged during Christmas last year. We were doubtlessly exultant when offered the opportunity to help furnish and do up the home again this very Chinese New Year! Voluntarism is our steering drive, yet abundance of self-motivation, passion and warmth are decidedly vital too!

With past successes to spur us on, the unit will be putting in place tremendous efforts in preparation for the 'National Foot Drill Competition 09' this upcoming Saturday at 'Fair Field Methodist Secondary School'! I veritably look forward to satisfactory results for Hua Yi Red Cross! Here wishing the unit, all the best and let's perform to our best aptitudes there and then! :)

Chinese New Year's Greetings

Dear all,
it is of great pleasure of mine to wish one and all in Hua Yi Red Cross a very Happy Chinese New Year.
2008 had indeed been a fruitful year for our unit.
And, i withhold firm beliefs that 2009 will be an equivocally paying one.
Hereby, i look forward to enjoying more fruits of labour with the union and collaboration alongside the unit.
Wish all cadets the best of luck in their studies!
Lets all bring Hua Yi Red Cross to a higher level in the upcoming year! :)
Once again, Happy Chinese New Year!
